Why Toyota Remains Australia’s Most Trusted Car Brand in a Changing Market

Line of Toyota's on a beach lookout

Australia’s car market is changing faster than ever. New brands are entering the country, electric vehicles are reshaping the industry and imports are coming from more countries than ever. But through all the change, one brand keeps showing up at the top of the charts: Toyota.

From trust surveys to national sales figures, the data consistently tells the same story, Australians trust Toyota, And in the automotive industry, trust is everything.

So why does Toyota continue to dominate in Australia?

Let’s crunch these numbers.

Toyota Named Australia’s Most Trusted Automotive Brand

Recent research from  Roy Morgan Trust & Distrust rankings, has once again confirmed Toyota’s position as the most trusted automotive brand in Australia. The study measures how Australians feel about major brands across the country and Toyota continues to rank above all other car manufacturers.

In fact, the results place Toyota not just at the top of the automotive category, but among the most trusted brands across any industry in Australia.

That’s an incredible achievement in a country where drivers rely heavily on their vehicles for not only daily life but work, travel and so much more.

Trust in the automotive world usually comes down to four things:

  • Reliability
  • Longevity
  • Communication
  • Availability

Toyota has spent decades building a reputation around exactly those qualities, and if you’ve spoken to anyone whipping around with that badge, they’ll say the same thing.

Toyota Still Dominates Australian Sales

It’s one thing for people to say they trust a brand, but when you walk into a dealership and see Toyota on almost every lot, you realize the numbers tell the real story.

Toyota has finished number one in Australian new-car sales for 23 consecutive years, according to VFACTS industry figures. That’s before you had your MP3 player and were checking yourMySpace.

Australian buyers consistently choose Toyota vehicles across multiple builds. Strong contenders include their SUVs (like the rav4), Hybrid cars (like the Prius), Commercial vans (like the HiAce), Utes (like the HiLux) or 4WDs (like the Landcruiser). Toyota has built a lineup that covers nearly every corner of the market. When we say every corner, have you seen their boats or sewing machines.

Australia’s Car Market Is Changing

While Toyota leads the charge in car sales, the tides change in the waters below.

Data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) shows that China recently became Australia’s largest source of imported vehicles for a single month, overtaking Japan for the first time in nearly three decades.

In February 2026 alone:

  • 22,362 vehicles sourced from China were sold
  • 21,671 vehicles sourced from Japan were sold

This marks a significant moment in the industry. For 28 years, Japan had been Australia’s leading vehicle source. Now, with the rise of new manufacturers (focused around electric), the competitive landscape is expanding rapidly, with no sign of slowing down either.

New Brands Are Flooding the Marketa BYD model and Geely model side by side

Since 2020, ten new automotive brands have entered Australia, and most of them originate from China. As the automotive landscape evolves, Australian buyers now have more choice than ever before.

But while new brands can gain attention quickly, brand trust is something that takes years, often decades, to build. In the automotive world, trust is usually earned through reliability, long-term ownership, part availability and strong customer support.

Recent national trust research highlights just how significant that reputation can be. The same Roy Morgan data that ranked Toyota among Australia’s most trusted brands, also showed that Tesla ranked sixth on the list of the Australia’s most distrusted brands.

That contrast highlights popularity and visibility don’t always translate to trust. Building a strong reputation with drivers takes time. Something manufacturers like Toyota have spent decades developing in the Australian market.

Finish Line

The Aussie car market is being shaken up, if you’re watching you can see it. Imports are shifting, new manufacturers are arriving, and electric technology is reshaping the industry. But even in a rapidly evolving market, Toyota remains a constant.

With trust rankings that consistently place it at the top, and sales figures that continue to lead the industry, Toyota has built something few brands achieve, a reputation that spans generations.

And in a market filled with new names and new technology, that reputation still carries a lot of weight.
